With less than 200 mm of rainfall per year, the climate in the marshes is considered semi-tropical dry. It is characterized by hot summers (average maximum temperature is about 43 °C) and mild to cold winters (average minimum temperature is 4 °C). In the summer, dust storms are common and heat waves can raise temperatures to 48 °C. During the winter, temperatures can drop to -8 °C. Humidity is low while evaporation from water surfaces is high, causing water loss as evaporation is ten times more than the contribution of rainfall in the region
