Istanbul or Istanbul, historically known as Byzantium, Constantinople, Astana, and Istanbul, is the largest city in Turkey and the second largest city in the world in terms of population, with a population of 13.4 million people. Istanbul is also considered a “mega city” and is seen as Turkey’s cultural, economic and financial center. The city covers 39 districts that make up Istanbul. Istanbul is located on the Bosphorus and encircles the natural harbor known as the “Golden Horn” or located in the northwest of the country. The city extends along the European side of the Bosphorus, known as “Thrace”, and the Asian side or “Anatolia”, and therefore it is the only city in the world that is located on two continents. This city was the capital of a number of countries and empires throughout its long history, and was the capital of the Roman Empire The Byzantine Empire, the Latin Empire, and the Ottoman Empire (1453–1922).

In most of these stages, the city was surrounded by an aura of holiness, as it had great religious importance to its residents and the residents of neighboring countries. It was an important city for Christians after the Byzantine Empire embraced the Christian religion, before it turned to become the capital of the Islamic caliphate of the Ottoman Empire from 1517 until 1924. Istanbul was chosen as the joint capital of European culture for 2010, and its historical monuments, and before that, in 1985, were added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
